On The Game:
"They played us extremely well; they hurt us defensively, executed. We were poor closing out, we were undisciplined allowing 34 fouls, giving up 100 points; they scored 54 points in the second half. So we weren't on our A-game but at the end of the day these are the types of games you've got to win and you come back tomorrow and you work on some things and get better. I thought we faced adversity and gutted out a win, but certainly we've got to be better across the board."

On Harrison Barnes and Carl Landry:
"Those guys did a very good job. I think both can be better defensively, but certainly offensively they played well. Carl is a guy that we are going to run offense through in that second unit and he puts pressure on big players. Harrison was very good across the board."

On Stephen Curry:
"It was great. The idea coming in was we wanted to give Steph increased minutes; we did that. Very pleased with his performance not only scoring the basketball but facilitating and making plays."

Blog buddy: Athletics Nation (because there's another game happening in Oakland tonight that you can actually watch)

About an hour after first pitch for the Oakland A's and Detroit Tigers' decisive Game 5 in the MLB playoffs at O.co Coliseum tonight, the Golden State Warriors will tip-off against Maccabi Haifa at Oracle Arena.

And given that you can't watch this Warriors exhibition game against a non-NBA opponent, I won't blame you if your attention is directed toward the other side of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum complex - the Warriors' game is even more insignificant than most preseason games in comparison to what's happening at O.co.

Nevertheless, as you might expect, the Warriors still have work to do and aren't taking this game any less seriously. And for at least three players, tonight's game is in fact meaningful in various ways.

Three observations

For second-year forward Jeremy Tyler it might mean a little more than most on a personal note: as reported by San Francisco Chronicle reporter Rusty Simmons, Maccabi Haifa is where Jeremy Tyler began his professional basketball career after leaving high school early and, "...had on-court shoving matches, was called lazy, out of shape and soft, and ended up quitting with five weeks remaining in the 2009-10 season." As Warriors coach Mark Jackson said yesterday after practice, Maccabi should be prepared to see a different Jeremy Tyler than they briefly came to know.

Maccabi Haifa's video preview of tonight's game with Jeremy Tyler, Stephen Curry, and Mark Jackson.

For Stephen Curry, tonight's game is another opportunity to get some reps and get back in game shape, as also reported by Simmons.

Harrison Barnes will be getting his first start, as reported by Contra Costa Times reporter Marcus Thompson II.

Three questions

How will Barnes fit with the starting unit?

Evanz put together a nice shot chart of Barnes' first two preseason games, which he posted on Twitter.

So far it's clear Barnes likes shooting from the right side of the court (although he also had two left drives for dunks on Monday), but he's shown much improved ball handling and a stronger post-up game in preseason since summer league.

Jackson said this is a chance to actually see how Barnes might look with the starting unit, so it might be interesting to watch how they use him with that unit tonight. Where will the team be looking to set Barnes up? Or will he primarily fill the role of a spot up shooter to spread the court when he's playing with the starters?

How will Curry perform tonight after two days of practice?

Curry said in his post-practice interview yet that conditioning is a big part of what he's working on, but a lot of getting ready for the season is going to come down to just getting minutes on the floor.

"Conditioning is a big part of it as you start to feel like every play you're able to make a play, defensively and offensively - shooting the ball, getting into the lane and making decisions," said Curry. "Skill work just kind of comes out of that. Then in certain situations you just gotta make plays in practice and in games. So if I'm able to continue getting those opportunities - reps - my game will start to come back. But I'm really not that far away."

Given that the pain he felt on Monday night was apparently unrelated to his surgically repaired ankle, we should probably expect to see Curry get more reps. Coach Mark Jackson essentially concurred after saying that Curry will probably get more minutes tonight.

"I was very happy with his first game and I think the more he plays, he's going to get more and more comfortable meaning not physically but as far as he hasn't played in a while," said Jackson. "Some of these days, practice is actually his game - we're trying to get him there."

Is the Warriors' defense ahead of the offense right now?

Another thing that Curry addressed was the defense being a bit ahead of the offense right now in terms of execution. Curry noted that while they've held their first two preseason opponents under 40% defensively, offensively they're, "...kind of running too fast and getting mixed up with their execution and timing."

When asked what the source of the problem was, he offered a reflection on last season.

"It's about executing it better than we did last year, especially in the fourth quarter," said Curry. "Our talent kind of kept us in it the first three quarters and then the defenses really tightened up and pressure situations came up in the fourth quarter - there was like five games that we lost...games we should've won. We played good defense, but then in the fourth quarter we turned the ball over we didn't get good shots, our offense was sluggish. That's the next step - being able to execute perfectly throughout the whole game and in the fourth quarter when it matters."

Part of the solution for their inconsistent offensive execution is the addition of point guard Jarrett Jack, who has drawn mixed reviews thus far from the GSoM community but has impressed coach Jackson thus far.

"He's a proven guy," said Jackson. "Extremely tough, very vocal, knows how to run a team. I think the issue is that a week, week and a half ago, he wasn't 100%. Another guy that gets his reps, continues to work his tail off - I have no concerns about him. He definitely brings something to this team that was much needed."

Today I had the opportunity to check out the end of the Golden State Warriors' practice and take part in the media session afterwards.

Since it was my first time there I was more of an observer than anything else; the following is just a quick rundown of a few of those observations.

With Maccabi Haifa in town for tomorrow night's game at Oracle Arena, the Golden State Warriors prepared for the game just like any other game - as both Warriors coach Mark Jackson and point guard Stephen Curry alluded to in their post-practice interviews, they're a pro team that runs pro stuff so you have to treat this game just like any other game.

There will be more on that game around the web from the various outlets there and Warriors.com, but here are a few totally random observations and non-earth shattering tidbits of information from the day.

Coach Mark Jackson said Harrison Barnes will start Thursday. The rookie gets his chance to make his case - bit.ly/ThiKUW

Obviously the big news, as reported by Contra Costa Times reporter Marcus Thompson II already, is that Warriors coach Mark Jackson announced that rookie small forward Harrison Barnes will be getting his first start against Maccabi tomorrow night. It's not a permanent decision at this point, but it will give the coaching staff an opportunity to see how he does and Barnes a chance to get some more run with the starting unit (which will otherwise remain the same).

Center Andrew Bogut continued to be a "limited participant" in practice as he continues his rehab on his left ankle. Rookie forward Draymond Green was also out once again with a left knee inflammation and is considered day-to-day. Nevertheless, Green was constantly engaged in practice: talking to vets, asking questions of coaches, and just soaking up everything. By all accounts he's a high IQ player and it starts with how he approaches practices even when he can't actually play.

A film crew was in attendance to follow the Maccabi team, which was one of the clubs Warriors forward Jeremy Tyler played during his experience overseas after leaving high school early. Obviously makes for a nice story for them. After tomorrow night's game, the crew will head to Minnesota for Maccabi's game against the Timberwolves. The NBA games are their first two major events of the season.

Media was allowed into the practice gym to watch the last few minutes of practice, which was basically just a walk-through of the scout for Maccabi.

After they broke their huddle, players spread out across the practice court to shoot free throws. Watching Stephen Curry, who's still just working himself back into the flow of things after sitting out for months due to injury, shoot free throws is a thing of beauty. With Jarrett Jack rebounding for him, Curry was shooting - and making - free throws at about the pace I would make shots on one of those arcade basketball games. Good free throw shooting starts with reps; great free throw shooting comes when you're able to hit them almost by reflex.

Bogut was getting a light workout across the facility with assistant coach Darren Erman, doing a little bit of catching and shooting as well as jogging through a drill where he received the ball off cuts and finished at the rim. It's impossible to take anything from that kind of stuff, but he's up and moving, which is nice to see since we haven't seen him on the court this season.

As Thompson has already tweeted, Jarrett Jack was the last guy on the practice court getting his shots up, but there were a number of guys sticking around well after practice to get shots in after they officially broke the huddle.

Although Green was a limited participant in practice, he was one of the last three guys in the gym getting some shots up along with Tarence Kinsey. After Kinsey left the court, Green continued just putting up some threes. As he left the court after his final interview, Jackson poked fun at Green a bit remarking, "Ay Dray, you weren't hittin' all those threes in summer league!" Green, probably one of the lighthearted guys on the team, just laughed him off and continued to knock down his shots.

Both Sammy Gelfand and Kirk Lacob, who I had an opportunity to chat with in Santa Cruz, were in attendance for the practice and introduced me briefly to Santa Cruz Warriors assistant Casey Hill. The group was sitting courtside watching practice when media were allowed to enter.

As this was my first time at a Warriors' practice, I am in no position to compare this to past years but by all accounts the atmosphere this season - from players' willingness to go out into the community to the number of guys sticking around after practice - is just more positive than it has been in recent years. Even if the team falls short of some of our loftier expectations for this year, things definitely seem to be moving in the right direction.
