Yes, Saturday's play of the night was probably Steph Curry taking the charge on Chris Paul in the closing moments to secure the win, but that play's already been broken down nicely over at True Hoop, so let's take a look at a really timely contribution late in the game by rookie Harrison Barnes.

So to set the stage a bit, there is just over three minutes left in the game and Chris Paul has just hit a three to bring the Clippers to within one point, 103-102. The Warriors bring the ball up and look to get it back to Carl Landry in the post, who had been doing work all game long (23pts on 11-16).

As you see the Clippers are defending the undersized Landry by fronting him with the very athletic Blake Griffin. That and the fact that Curry is being hounded by CP3 is enough for Steph to waive Landry off instead of attempting the entry pass, and call for Lee to set a high screen.

Now before Lee can actually set a screen Steph drives to his left, taking both Paul and Lee's man with him, and he's able to hit an open Lee with the behind the back pass. As you see here by the time Lee catches the ball Crawford has come over to help off of Jack. Now Lee can choose to take the contested shot, drive, or swing the ball to an open man. Jack is open at the top, but he's not set up at the three point line and it would be a pretty easy recovery for Crawford. Barnes is also open on the right wing, thanks to Caron Butler dropping into the paint when Curry made his move, so Lee opts to use the skip pass and gets it to HB.

Butler closes hard to take away the three point shot. This is the right move because the book on Barnes at this point is that he settles for the outside shot too much... but not this time. Instead of jacking up a contested three, Barnes takes advantage of Caron's momentum from covering all that ground to get out to the arc, and makes an aggressive and decisive move. Harrison uses the triple threat beautifully by first showing a quick pump fake and immediately following with a hard jab step to his right, which freezes Butler.

After the jab step he launches to his left and goes right around Caron. With two dribbles he's around his man and all the way to the rim, splitting two more defenders and finishing with the layup to put them up 105-102. It was really nice to see the rookie making such a strong move when the game was on the line. Moments like these will give him confidence, and give coach Jackson the confidence in him he needs to continue to put him out there in the fourth quarter of close games.

With Andrew Bogut taking the night off, Stephen Curry's shot off, and Brandon Rush learning that he'd be out for the season earlier in the day, the Golden State Warriors' reserves stepped up to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to victory.

Put simply, the Golden State Warriors' 114-110 win over the Los Angeles Clippers last night was probably not how we imagined them winning games.

Playing at Staples Center, the Warriors were only 4-for-16 from the 3-point line. Starting backcourt Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were a combined 12-for-33 from the field with Curry recording a team-high 5 turnovers. A number of fouls marred the game and kept the Warriors in foul trouble.

Yet similar to their season-opening win against the Phoenix Suns, the depth that we've talked about all offseason – both touting it and wondering just how deep the team really is – ended up helping the Warriors earn a big road win.

Key player: Carl Landry with another double-double

Jerry West has said that the Warriors were soft last season and as Matt Steinmetz of CSN Bay Area tweeted last night losing Brandon Rush to a season-ending ACL injury doesn't make the team any tougher on the perimeter.

But Carl Landry and Jarrett Jack showed what they're made of last night, for those that weren't already aware; if there is anything positive we can take away from last night's performance with Rush and center Andrew Bogut out it's that this is probably one of the grittiest Warriors teams we've seen in some time in large part due to the additions of veterans Landry and Jack.

Landry dominated the boards last night on his way to yet another double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, with half of those boards coming in the fourth quarter as the Clippers fought their way back from down 14 points. Whenever things seemed to get close and the Warriors needed to make a play, Landry just seemed to have a knack for making something happen on his own by just outworking the Clippers frontcourt in the paint.

Key statistic: Warriors dominate the offensive boards

On the strength of Landry's outstanding performance – and David Lee's characteristically effective board work on the defensive end - the Warriors had a rebounding performance that even West probably couldn't have imagined when he commented during the offseason that the Warriors would be stronger on the boards.

Statistics via Basketball-Reference.com.

While Landry's impact on the boards showed up statistically, rookie center Festus Ezeli's role in taking up space shouldn't be underestimated - the combination of Ezeli and Landry held the Clippers without an offensive rebound in 13 minutes last night (Ezeli was so good that he played all 12 minutes in the third quarter, which matched Griffin's 12, but didn't have more to give in the fourth).

The Warriors turned their offensive rebounding advantage into a 19-13 advantage in second chance points, which is significant in a four point game that came down to the last few possessions.

Clippers statistical MVP: Chris Paul has a career-high 20 free throw attempts

Among the defining moments of this game, if not the defining performance, was the Warriors' star point guard taking a charge with under a minute left to help prevent a Chris Paul layup that would've put the outcome of the game in doubt. Kevin Arnovitz broke down those critical moments well in his recap last night.

Paul wasn't surprised by the switch, and made it abundantly clear after the game that the coverage in that situation is immaterial to him -- switch, trap, hedge, assault. In Paul's world, he always has the advantage, particularly the Warrior's duo.

"You think I care which one of them guards me?" Paul said. "Come on, now. Stephen Curry? All-defense, huh? Psshhhh ... Come on, now."

While Paul and Lee were performing their dance, Curry had to contend with Griffin on the block, but Curry figured that the ball this was Paul's game to win or lose.

Even if Curry didn't earn himself any defensive respect around the league with that play, it was a heads-up play that ultimately saved the game – when you talk about mental toughness under pressure, it's hard to come up with a better example in a game full of pretty good ones.

But that felt like just about the only whistle that went the Warriors' way last night.

Paul had 20 of the Clippers 52 free throw attempts, a career-high for him and an excruciating experience for those of us watching at home. Yet for all the complaints about the officiating in that game, Paul certainly deserves credit for his effort – his nine attempts in the fourth quarter were crucial for the Clippers' comeback attempt as the Clippers otherwise had to rely heavily on 1-on-1 play; take away Paul's 13 fourth quarter points mostly on free throws and Jamal Crawford's 12 fourth quarter points mostly from beyond the arc and the rest of the Clippers had just six points with Blake Griffin having none.

Yet in a game featuring a pair of star point guards in the starting lineup, it's quite impressive that it was the play of a point guard off the bench that really stands out.

Warriors statistical MVP: Jarrett Jack helping to keep the Warriors' offense going

In the Warriors' two wins thus far, Stephen Curry is a combined 8-for-30 from the field and just 2-for-13 from the 3-point line. A large part of what helped them survive a so-so offensive performance from Curry last night was the play of Jack.

Setting aside his -3 plus/minus rating, having a point guard that can come off the bench and come up with 7 assists without committing a turnover is a luxury most teams don't have, especially for the Warriors' franchise. He's still spending a large portion of his time playing alongside Curry (27 minutes last night) and it has been an effective lineup with Curry able to come off screens with Jack setting him up. With Curry having a bit of an off-shooting night last night, Jack leveraged an old connection to hit Landry for 3 of his 7 assists. But so far this season, we've seen the double point guard pairing work even better than those of us who expected to see the Warriors staff go to it on occasion. Jack's ability to pass and score makes it a potent combination, even if we might expect that pairing to struggle defensively against bigger backcourts.

In any event, the bench combination of Landry and Jack has not only given the Warriors a boost but has arguably carried the team in times of struggle by giving them additional ways to generate offense and taking some of the pressure off of Curry. Seeing them perform as well as they did last night without Bogut even on the floor has to be enough to give even the most pessimistic fan a jolt of optimism about the team's prospects this season.

The Golden State Warriors' 114-110 win tonight came down to making clutch plays down the stretch while the Los Angeles Clippers faltered, with Stephen Curry drawing an offensive foul on superstar point guard Chris Paul to seal the deal on a night when the whistles hadn't gone the Warriors' way.

And that's not even what made this win so impressive.

Tom Lorenzo, Steve Perrin, and I all believed that the Los Angeles Clippers were the more difficult matchup for the Golden State Warriors in this weekend's back-to-back.

And after watching the Warriors lose to the Memphis Grizzlies last night at GSoM NIght and losing Brandon Rush to injury, the chances of winning tonight felt even slimmer.

That they were also facing a deep Clippers team at Staples Center with the planned absence of center Andrew Bogut made it seem like this game could've turned into a blowout.

So allow me a moment to eat my words: the Warriors showed as much heart tonight as I've seen them show in years.

Carl Landry came up big once again to tie Curry with a team-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds. David Lee did his work on the defensive boards with a team-high 12 rebounds. Klay Thompson was only 6-for-17, but was aggressive driving to the rim and rebounding.

Overcoming the absence of two rotation players, suspect officiating that led to 52 free throws for the Clippers, and being on the road against an opponent that had just knocked off two likely playoff teams is the type of thing that teams aiming for the playoffs do...meaning it's not a feat we're not used to seeing the Warriors pull off.

Maybe the Clippers simply decided that coming off a win against the Los Angeles Lakers the Warriors game was simply a win waiting to happen. Maybe the Warriors rallied in the name of their fallen teammate. Maybe the Warriors just wanted to prove something to themselves after an uneven performance against the Grizzlies last night. But whatever the explanation, the Warriors came into a game with the odds stacked against them and found a way to win by simply outworking, outhustling, and ultimately outscoring a playoff team on its own floor. They were more active on offense and generally more patient on offense without the help of arbitrary trips to the foul line.

It's a testament to their bench, the work ethic of their rookies to be prepared when it's their time to step up, the improvement of guys like Klay Thompson, how well these pieces fit together and almost everything that has made us excited about this team leading up to opening night.

Does this one game mean that all doubts about the Warriors' ability to compete for the playoffs have been challenged? Certainly not. But it certainly gives us something to remain excited about the direction of this franchise.

What to watch for (possibly good things)

MOAR BAZEMORE: Kent Bazemore is on his way to achieving cult classic status at GSoM after showing that he might be able to play something called "defense" in summer league games. With Brandon Rush out - and in a game in which Andrew Bogut is also out - it would be nice to see Bazemore get some run.

More Stephen Curry with Jarrett Jack? So far the Stephen Curry and Jarrett Jack have played together for 35 minutes and the Curry - Jack - Carl Landry - David Lee - Klay Thompson lineup is a +75.6, the highest rated unit of any in the first two games. With the Warriors now needing to redistribute Rush's minutes, might we see more of this lineup?

Post play: With Bogut out for tonight's game, rookie Festus Ezeli will start, we'll probably see quite a bit of David Lee at center, and in the event of foul trouble might we see a bit of Andris Biedrins?

Will we see the rookies step up tonight? The rookies are going to get some time tonight. Will they step up with a couple of veterans out? Win or lose, it's always nice to see progress from the young guys in a game like this.

Predictions (bad things):

Losing sucks: It's almost impossible to avoid seeing this game as a loss.

The Warriors will get dunked on, possibly many times: There are going to be defensive breakdowns if last night's game against Memphis is any indication. Against the Clippers, that means getting dunked on.

Jamal Crawford will remain hot: Crawford has been outstanding for the Clippers in their first two games and I struggle to see how he'll suddenly cool off against this Warriors team.

As usual, leave all your thoughts before, during and after the game in the comments.

With wing Brandon Rush out for the season with an ACL injury and center Andrew Bogut scheduled for an absence as he works his way back into game shape, rookie guard Kent Bazemore and second-year center Jeremy Tyler will suit up for tonight's game against the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

We've discussed what Tyler can do ad nauseam around here, but this might be a chance to finally see MOAR BAZEMORE as we've all wanted. Although Bazemore is still adjusting to the NBA as a rookie, defense is a definite need with Rush going down and the hope is that Bazemore might be able to provide that in spots throughout the season.

In a Q&A before the L.A. Clippers' win against the L.A. Lakers, Steve Perrin of Clips Nation and I discussed stopping Lob City, the decision to match the Warriors' offer sheet for DeAndre Jordan, and three former Warriors on L.A.'s bench.

With the Golden State Warriors' opponents from today and yesterday playing each other on Wednesday, I actually contacted the bloggers from both teams shortly after the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Memphis Grizzlies on L.A. figuring that both would provide some meaningful insight on this pair of games and thus give some extra insight to chew on as we think about the state of the Warriors right now. As I mentioned in today's preview, the consensus was that the Warriors' chances of beating the Clippers on the road are slim if they couldn't beat the Grizzlies at home.

The following is my Q&A with Steve Perrin of Clips Nation who answered these questions prior to the Clippers' big win over the Lakers last night but still offered some meaningful insight on the Clippers. For my thoughts on the Warriors entering this game, check out Steve's questions for me over at Clips Nation. For some third party insight on the Clippers-Warriors matchup, check out my Q&A with Tom Lorenzo of Straight Outta Vancouver from yesterday.

Please let me know if there's a perspective on this game that I've missed.

Q&A with Clips Nation

1. It's obvious that scheduling a season opener between the Clippers and Grizzlies was more than a coincidence after last season's playoff meeting. While the Lakers might be considered your biggest rival, how big a rivalry would you consider the Clippers and Grizzlies right now?

Steve Perrin: We've discussed this a lot at Clips Nation -- the Lakers are certainly the most obvious rival. If geography is an important aspect of rivalries, the quarters doesn't get closer than sharing a building. Unfortunately the Clippers haven't been a competitive rival for the Lakers to date, though hopefully that is changing. The Clippers and Grizzlies have similarly dismal histories (hello, Warriors!) and are trying to take a step into sustained success, so they've got that in common. Obviously they've been very competitive recently, and equally obviously they do NOT like each other. So yeah, it has the makings of a decent rivalry. If they were to meet in a 4-5 or a 6-3 playoff matchup this year (which is in the realm of possibility) it would definitely take another step as a rivalry.

2. Depth was clearly a major factor in that season opener and the Clippers weren't even at full strength. Given all of the absences, was that bench performance surprising to you at all or is it really going to be that good all year?

SP: I always found it interesting when stats would list San Antonio high in bench points or some such because of course Ginobili was a bench player in name only. On Wednesday night, that was true of Crawford, who was essentially a starter coming off the bench -- not to mention that he had an absolute monster of a game with 29 points. But even without Crawford, the Clippers bench outscored the Memphis bench, so that's impressive. So to answer your question, I knew the Clippers bench was going to be good, and if it was a little better than I thought it might be last night, just wait until Barnes is back and Hill is healthy. The Clippers were thin at small forward last night, but they will have one of the deepest and most talented benches in the NBA this season, provided Crawford and particularly Lamar Odom are anywhere close to the players they have been.

3. Your bench includes three former Warriors. Have any of those three shown anything so far that you didn't expect?

SP: Oh hey, look at that, there are three Warriors there. Hadn't really thought about that. I've always liked Ronny Turiaf and he is pretty much who I thought he was. Great energy, solid post defense, great towel waver. He can provide a decent approximation of Reggie Evans 'rebounding, defense and beard for the Clippers this year, but when everyone's healthy, he won't play much (depending on the opponent).

Jamal Crawford is one of those guys who absolutely seduces your eyes, but you have to keep using your brain and looking at the stats to keep some perspective. He is an amazing shot maker and has that Kobe-esque ability to make incredibly tough shots. Unfortunately, he always shares Kobe's proclivity for taking tough shots. But so far in preseason and the first game he's been simply great as a Clipper. I remember now that he came into the league as a point guard, but his passing ability has been quite eye-opening.

Matt Barnes has impressed as well. He was terrific in preseason, providing a wing slasher that the Clippers really need. He's that player that you hate when he's on the other team because he's an a-hole; but then when he becomes your a-hole you love him, know what I mean?

4. Tom Lorenzo said prior to the opener with the Clippers that the Grizzlies could stop Lob City from getting out of hand by getting back on defense and "... counter the Lobs with our presence in the paint." How successful were the Grizzlies in actually accomplishing that?

SP: I think the problem with that reasoning is that it tends to assume the Clippers are a running team. The Clippers actually played at one of the slowest paces in the league last season, and while they say they're going to run more this year (and so far it seems like they are indeed trying to) this is really a half court team. The Chris Paul pick and roll is always going to create some seams as defenders rotate and scramble, and Paul will be able to find guys like Griffin and Jordan at the rim as a result. Presence in the paint or not, Paul and the Clipper bigs don't need a lot of space to finish a lob. In fact, Paul hit Jordan for a crucial one in the final minutes Wednesday night to more or less seal the win, and that was on a Griffin-Paul pick and roll in the half court.

5. You and I had an exchange early last season about DeAndre Jordan - the Warriors made him an offer, the Clippers matched, Jordan struggled, the Warriors eventually got Andrew Bogut to fill their center spot instead and you've written a few times now that Jordan seems to have turned a corner this preseason. In hindsight, how do you feel about that decision to match the Warriors' offer for Jordan?

SP: I've always understood why the Clippers matched on Jordan -- they more or less had to do it. He's pals with Griffin, Paul has compared him to Tyson Chandler from his New Orleans days, and if nothing else they had to match to convey seriousness and overcome the impression that they are cheap. Still, I think the Dubs were shrewd, essentially knowing all that, to push the price tag up on DJ.

Having said all that, and recognizing that all bigs - especially athletic ones - are overpaid, Jordan is now showing signs that he could earn his paycheck. It was certainly problematic that the Clippers had a player making $10M sitting on their bench at the end of every playoff game last season, replaced by guys like Reggie Evans and Kenyon Martin making a fraction as much. But DeAndre is vastly improved as an offensive player this year, and if he can maintain that focus, he can make a major contribution. He might still be on the bench at the end, but at least this year it will be in favor of a guy like Lamar Odom which is a bit more justifiable.

Looping back to the offer sheet, when Griffin's extension kicks in next year and assuming the team re-signs Paul, the Clippers will be severely hamstrung regarding the luxury tax, and Jordan's contract is a big part of that. So still a shrewd move by the Warriors, and Jordan really, really needs to earn that paycheck going forward as the Clippers have less money to spend on guys to pick up the slack for him.

6. You mentioned in your preview of the opener that the Clippers and Grizzlies were mirror opposites of one another: "The Clippers won with a terrific offense and middling defense, the Grizzlies won with good defense despite a mediocre offense." Given how familiar you are with the Grizzlies, which of those two teams do you think matches up better with the Warriors?

I'll admit up front that I don't have much feel for what to expect from a Warriors team with Andrew Bogut in the middle -- I'm not sure I know who you are anymore, and I'm pretty scared of what you could be. The Grizzlies LOVE to force turnovers and thrive on that. The Clippers beat Memphis consistently last season by doing a good job of taking care of the ball (something they didn't do well Wednesday night). Likewise the Warriors did a pretty good job taking care of the ball last year, and should be better still if Curry is healthy. So I'm going to say that the Clippers will be the tougher matchup for you guys simply because defense has never been you're strong point and the Clippers are looking like an even better offensive team this year than last year. But again, Bogut could change that significantly.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait to see Bogut's impact on this matchup at some other point in time, but thanks for the insight Steve!
