Santa Cruz Warriors update: Training camp roster, D-League draft selections, Kiwi Gardner moves on

New, comment

Saturday's D-League Draft brought the Santa Cruz Warriors new talent, while some players found new homes during the off-season.

Dak Dillon-USA TODAY Sports

The Santa Cruz Warriors released their training camp roster yesterday with five returning players and three "affiliate players", who will join the D-League franchise after participating in the Golden State Warriors' training camp.

Xavier Henry, Chris Udofia, and Juwan Staten are the familiar names on the team as affiliate players while Darington Hobson, Milos Milisavljevic, Anthony Vereen, Daniel Nwaelele, and Moe Baker will be returning to the D-League squad.

In addition, the Warriors made seven selections during the 2015 NBA D-League Draft over the weekend. The draft was the fourth in Santa Cruz history.

Santa Cruz opts for size in D-League draft

It seems that the focus for the Santa Cruz Warriors during the 2015 D-League draft was size, as they went for bigs in the first two rounds and will be improving on their rim protection this upcoming season.

Jared Shaw was selected 18th overall by the Santa Cruz Warriors and went undrafted last year. From there, he went on to play for Mamak Belediye Ankara DSI of the Turkish Basketball League.

Justin Manns was the 37th overall pick and Ronnie Brewer was selected 30th overall by the Santa Cruz Warriors. Brewer was selected 14th overall by the Utah Jazz in 2006; he played for six different NBA clubs over the past nine seasons.

Kiwi Gardner says farewell

As of a couple weeks ago, Kiwi Gardner has signed for a team called Al-Ansar in the Saudi Premier League in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

In 2013, Gardner attended open tryouts for teams in the NBA Development League and was invited to the 2013 Santa Cruz Warriors training camp.

He made the team, and called Santa Cruz his home for two years.

While he is sad to leave his family and home, he is excited for what's to come in Saudi Arabia.
